Downtown Rio has many empty or underused buildings. To make things worse, the number of illegal occupations is growing every day and this demonstrates the housing shortage in big cities and the will to live in central areas closer to existing infrastructure and workplaces. The main objective of this thesis is to create a sustainable initiative that promotes rehabilitation projects of protected residential buildings in central areas of the city. This will serve as a guide for this new type of project, which will use sustainable tools to improve the standards of living, in addition to pomote buildings self-sufficiency. Therefore, the econommy of use and operation will be reversed in conservation and preservation of the heritage.
