The research activities of the Graduate Program in Architecture of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - PROARQ / FAU-UFRJ started in 1987, when the first class of the Academic Master's in Architecture was opened. Since then, the Program has been restructured in order to meet the contemporary demand for research, with the concern of showing itself in tune with the advances in production and the modification of the knowledge process in architecture, having started its Doctorate in Architecture course in 2003. The Professional Master in Project and Heritage was created in 2013.

In 2017, the Coordination for the Improvement of Education Personnel - CAPES classified the Doctorate and Academic Master's at level 6 (six), the highest level of evaluation among all graduate courses in Architecture.

A little before, in 2015 PROARQ was awarded by the "GRANDE PRÊMIO CAPES DE TESE in the Area of ​​Humanities, Linguistics, Letters and Arts, Applied and Multidisciplinary Social Sciences", becoming the first Graduate Program in Architecture in the Brazil to receive this award. And a few years later, in 2020, he was awarded an Honorable Mention in the Award "PREMIO CAPES DE TESE".

OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

Since its foundation, PROARQ has maintained the objectives related to the production and dissemination of scientific and professional knowledge and the training of human resources for research and teaching in Architecture, seeking to privilege the constant updating and renewal of the theoretical foundations and practice of this field, considering it both technological and cultural. Its activities are structured to ensure flexibility in the face of changes in the field of architecture and the interests of faculty and students. At PROARQ, research, teaching and academic production are structured according to two thematic areas of concentration - Quality, Environment and Landscape And Heritage, Theory and Criticism of Architecture - and remain updated through the diversity of the research lines developed.

In addition to the humanist approach, which underlies the Program, there is a concern with constructive technologies, production processes, rationalization and environmental comfort, aspects that have been present in the production of the course since its creation in 1987. Research, thematic studies and debates on the complexity of the problems involving the Project, Technology, Urban Culture, Preservation and Theory of Architecture are the priorities of the Research Lines and Projects, organized in the aforementioned Areas of Concentration, and materialize in the intellectual production of teachers , students and collaborators within the scope of research groups and laboratories.

The inter and transdisciplinary approach, the interrelationships between Theory and Practice and the inseparability between Teaching and Research are strengths of the Program and support the integration between the teaching and student bodies, structured in the Lines, Projects and Disciplines offered, constantly fed by ongoing research and results. The expansion of national and international agreements, the strengthening of lines and research groups, advisory services, the diversification of vehicles for dissemination and communication, and the organization of publications, seminars, workshops and exhibitions are actions to integrate teaching and learning activities. Research and graduate and undergraduate levels.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Seek academic-scientific excellence, increasing the production of knowledge, science and technology in the area of Architecture and Urbanism with the training of human resources for research, professional performance and teaching, through the strengthening and expansion of its network of scope relationships local, national and international.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

The specific objectives are commitments that the Program assumes until the end of the quadrennium, and that aim to achieve three established goals:

GOAL 1: Visibility and dissemination of knowledge:

• expand the participation of teachers and students in the main international scientific publications that address issues in the field of knowledge of Architecture and Urbanism;

• establishing partnerships to increase the production of innovative research in different areas of concentration, expanding the scope of the Program's bibliographic production;

• encourage the intellectual production of teachers and students, ensuring the permanent dissemination of the results obtained with the research developed in the Program;

• improving communication and dissemination interfaces, enabling remote actions and increasing the program's visibility.

GOAL 2: Social inclusion and vision of the future:

• encourage research in line with emerging themes related to the formation of cities and construction of buildings;

• deepen the discussions around technologies related to architecture and urbanism with an emphasis on the possibilities offered by digital technologies in the production of smart cities;

• improve research aimed at training masters and doctors prepared to work in society;

• deepen the discussions around the relationship between memory and innovation.

GOAL 3: Internationalization and Innovation

• consolidate agreements with Latin America, Portuguese-speaking countries and France, and expand international partnerships with other countries;

• expand national agreements with support from funding agencies;

• participate in academic cooperation networks with other programs and universities, which result, in particular, in an Interinstitutional Master and / or Doctorate (MINTER and DINTER);

• participate in interinstitutional projects within the scope of PROCAD (National Academic Cooperation Program) and other notices of this nature, taking the lead in the dissemination of knowledge and training of qualified labor in different parts of the country;

• encourage the extension actions created and the activities shared with the undergraduate (workshops, seminars, short courses and workshops) and that meet the emerging demands of society;

• encourage missions abroad with a view to strengthening research networks and creating new networks;

• pursue the search for institutional partnerships and municipalities that enable the application of the scientific knowledge developed in PROARQ, through agreements for technical assistance and training activities aimed at professionals linked to public agencies and civil society associations.

PLAN FOR ACADEMIC GOALS  - PROEX

Aiming to fulfill the goals established with a focus on maintaining the excellence in research achieved by PROARQ in the CAPES quadrennial evaluation, and in compliance with CAPES Ordinance No. 034, of May 30, 2006, PROARQ establishes the PROEX Management Committee, with the following responsibilities:

- description of the actions to be adopted in the Program for the next years;

- the distribution of the resources to be allocated (to make the established actions feasible);

- the criteria for the use and distribution of resources;

- description of the qualitative and quantitative goals related to each action.

RESEARCH LABORATORIES

PROARQ is located on the 4th floor of the Jorge Machado Moreira Building, where FAU and EBA / UFRJ live together, at Av. Pedro Calmon 550. It occupies rooms 429 to 445 (approximately 700 m2), in the University City of UFRJ - Ilha do Fundão. Its physical space consists of 16 laboratories of the active Research Groups, which physically occupy rooms 435, 437, 439 and 441; 3 classrooms; meeting room; auditorium with capacity for 60 people; coordination room; room for student studies and secretariat / administration. The research groups registered and consolidated at CNPq, over the 30 years of training (completed in 2017), bring together a large number of professors, collaborators, researchers, master's students, doctoral students, post-doctoral students, scientific initiation scholarship holders, extension scholarship holders and technical support fellows, who have the financial support of FAPERJ, CAPES and CNPq. The facilities of these laboratories are in line with the technological profile required for the research carried out, both in a physical network and in a logical network of multimedia resources, interconnecting the classrooms with wireless Internet access. The resources from projects, covenants, agreements and consultancies are intensively applied in the laboratories in order to make them accessible to graduate and undergraduate students, within international standards.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

PROARQ is equipped with resources acquired not only through institutional projects, but also with the support obtained through the approval of research projects by its professors in funding agencies (CAPES, CNPq, FAPERJ, FUJB). Many of its equipment were acquired through agreements and partnerships with companies and advisory services to government agencies. In 2014, PROARQ had about 85 fixed workstations, 28 mobile stations, 23 printers, 6 scanning equipment, 10 scanning projectors. datashow, 13 digital photography cameras, 2 film cameras, 6 portable audio recorders, 1 main fixed logic network and 1 wireless network, and 2 wireless subnets, multipoint video conferencing equipment, in addition to the equipment used in laboratories installed outside PROARQ, such as Environmental Comfort, the Modeling Workshop / Modeling Laboratory (LAMO) and the Research and Documentation Center (NPD).

LIBRARY

PROARQ graduate students have access to the Lucio Costa Library, which is integrated with the SIBI-Library System, linked to the libraries of FAU, IPPUR and the School of Fine Arts, and works in Block D of the Jorge building Machado Moreira.
