Professional Master Degree Dissertation

The construction of the Rail Line in the south of Espírito Santo, started around 1870, had the objective of run off of coffee production in the region, but was only delivered to the population in 1907. From the 1980s onwards, passenger trains stopped operating on this line, leaving only the cargo trains. In 1996, the Coastal Line began to be operated by the Centro Atlântica Railroad – RCA and, in 2000, was acquired by Vale do Rio Doce Company. The Line is currently disable for both, passengers and cargo (GIESBRETCH, 2013). However, part of the route of this line is located in a rich area, from the environmental and landscape point of view and today is already quite frequented by lovers of sports and nature, besides housing agricultural producers and artisans. Some stations that make up this rail route have undergone physical renovations and transformations in use in an attempt to offer new functions to society and preserve the local rail heritage. This dissertation, whose theme is rail heritage, has as its mais objective to develop the Ipê-Açú Station rehabilitation project and propose the reactivation of the Matilde-Ipê-Açú rail route, as a support to tourism, recreational activities present at the site, commerce agricultural products and regional crafts. Developed from bibliographic and field surveys (site visits, with photographic records) and presents and discusses the main concepts that underlie the work (rail heritage, preservation, reactivation and rehabilitation and tourism), presents the method of analysis used, contextualizes the area, focusing on the route and stations, which as a result draws maps, images, tables of the area; also presents the project references. As a result, it presents the rehabilitation project of the Ipê-Açú Station, which, due to its location and dimensions, stands out with excellent space to house a support center for the region’s sports and recreational activities, encouraging tourism, the economy and the improvement of conditions of the local population. Thus, its main contribution is to ratify the contribution of the reactivation of the railway and rehabilitation of the Ipê-Açú Station for the use of the population and the encouragement of local tourism.
