OLINTO DA GAMA BOTELHO STATE HIGH SCHOOL: SUBSIDIES FOR ONE PREVENTIVE CONSERVATION PLAN

Professional Master Degree Dissertation

Dissertação de Mestrado Profissional

The Olinto da Gama Botelho State High School was founded in the 1970s in the Engenho de Dentro neighborhood, a suburb of Rio de Janeiro. The building was part of Trajano de Medeiros & CIA train wagon maintenance workshops until the 20th century and supported the activities of the extinct Rede Ferroviária SA. Over the years, the industrial building in an eclectic style has changed it use until establishing itself as a school. In 1996, the architectural ensemble of Oficinas de Trajano had its historical and cultural importance recognized through its provisional listing, a title granted by the Municipal Council for Cultural Heritage of Rio de Janeiro. However, in 2005, the title was revoked providing changes in the urban landscape of the neighborhood, demolition of the workshops, and the construction of the Linha Amarela viaduct next to the main facade of the only remaining building of the workshops. These transformations still interfere with the conservation of the building, causing damage to its integrity. The objective of this work is to provide subsidies for the development of the school's Preventive Conservation Plan, recognizing the values attributed to the cultural asset, analyzing the state of conservation of the building, and identifying potentialities for proposing preventive conservation strategies. Its elaboration consisted of the archival, architectural, and photographic survey of the property, the bibliographic review on the concept of preventive conservation, and the analysis of national and international experiences in exert of the preventive conservation plan. The research was based on the need to understand whether the preservation of this building is possible and how it may be done without the treatment of the building offering more threats to the cultural heritage.
