ABSTRACT
The Marechal Floriano Avenue, or Long Street as it is popularly known, is an important avenue located in the centre of the city of Rio de Janeiro and was the scene of several important events in the history of Brazil. In recent decades, the avenue has suffered significant deterioration and neglect due to the various reforms that have been carried out in the city centre. Influenced by the Modern Movement, the urban space of the capital of Fluminense has been giving preference to the use of the automobile and the construction of large condominiums and isolated business buildings, detached from the urban space of everyday life and the comfort of its inhabitants. In recent years, various studies have been carried out in the urban centres of different cities around the world to improve the quality of life of their inhabitants by giving priority to spaces exclusively for pedestrians, removing cars and designing more sustainable spaces. Marechal Floriano Avenue, due to its morphology and because it is located in a strategic point, linking several important points of the city centre, has all the necessary characteristics to transform its urban landscape into a new public space for the use and enjoyment of its citizens.
