PROJETO DE REABILITAÇÃO DA CASA DO ESTUDANTE UNIVERSITÁRIO - UFRJ DESAFIOS DA SUSTENTABILIDADE NA PRESERVAÇÃO DO PATRIMÔNIO

Trabalho de Conclusão de Mestrado Profissional

The old Hotel Sete de Setembro (seventh of September) is a classic example of the hotel architecture used in Rio de Janeiro in the 1920s – a period of major urban projects undertaken in the city to commemorate the centenary of Independence. Located in the Flamengo neighborhood, next to Morro da Viúva, in front of Baía da Guanabara, it has a beautiful view of Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain). The resort hotel, intended for therapeutic treatments, operated only for a short period of time. In 1924 it was transferred to the federal government, dismembered, and transformed into the boarding school Escola de Enfermagem Ana Nery (Ana Nery School of Nursing), for nearly 50 years. In 1975, it became the university student housing function for UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) students for over 20 years. It was the stage for various cultural events throughout its existence and today is partially occupied by CBAE (Colégio Brasileiro de Altos Estudos). Most of its spaces are unused, housing obsolete installations. The CEU Rehabilitation Project presents an intervention proposal aimed to preserve the building by repurposing it for new use. The hotel-school program fulfills the building's vocation as a lodging place and adds the educational aspect with its own facilities for professional courses. Sustainability presented a great challenge throughout all stages of the project: the proposal of the school program included a social aspect in it, while the economic sustainability was also considered based on the hotel activity and sustainable construction practices. The design decisions were based on current sustainability principles coupled with the national historic preservation limitations. This work, the result of a Professional Master’s Degree in Design and National Heritage, aims to collaborate with alternative proposals related to the use of university cultural heritage with an eye towards preservation, and longevity.
