Final Paper in Professional Masters in Project and Heritage
The work presents reflections and proposals on possible changes to the landscape of Rua do Lavradio through the redefinition of public spaces and existing urban voids. Rua do Lavradio is located within the Cultural Environment Protection Area (APAC) of Cruz Vermelha (1992), near the APAC of the Cultural Corridor (1987). The theoretical-methodological framework for these reflections and intervention proposals is based on the ideas of three authors: Françoise Choay, Ulpiano Menezes, and Giulio Argan. In the first part of the study, reflections on urban ambiances are conducted based on the selected bibliography. Subsequently, the main concepts derived from this theoretical foundation are applied to the case study, aiming to contribute to the discussion on the preservation of the urban heritage of downtown Rio de Janeiro. Finally, an urban intervention proposal is presented at a preliminary study level for the free spaces and protected buildings mapped along Rua do Lavradio, with a focus on residential and cultural uses. The proposal is grounded in the relationship between the body and the city, as well as in individual perceptions of “experiencing” Rio de Janeiro's historical center. Among other uses, the proposal highlights the feasibility of producing visual arts as a tool for fostering recognition of the place; new uses for mapped free areas in the case study, aimed at promoting greater user permanence in these spaces; and the strengthening of the sense of belonging through residential uses.
