PATRIMÔNIO IGUAÇUANO: PROJETO DE INTERVENÇÃO NA ESTAÇÃO DE VILA DE CAVA.

Final Paper in Professional Masters in Project and Heritage

This dissertation presents an intervention project for the Old Vila de Cava Station. This cultural asset is located at Rua Alvares Gonçalves, number 44, in the neighborhood of the same name, in the city of Nova Iguaçu, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Inaugurated at the end of the 19th century, the Vila de Cava Station was a historical railway station of the former Rio D’Ouro Railway. This railway served as an important connection between Rio de Janeiro and Baixada Fluminense, aiming to capture water from the region's springs for the federal capital. The station is provisionally listed by INEPAC (State Institute of Cultural Heritage – Process Number: E-12/0.117/89 – 12/06/1989) and features neocolonial Hispanic characteristics, influenced by the "Missões style" or "California style." This distinguishes it from other classicizing stations of the former branch line. The building has been inactive since the 1970s, and its integrity is currently precarious, with risks to its existence as a cultural heritage site. Therefore, emergency work is needed to address the damage accumulated over the years and to restore the building for a new use. The station played an important role in the railway landscape of Baixada Fluminense and has been chosen to become a tourist and cultural reference point. The goal is to restore its significance as a local cultural heritage site. Located in an area with potential for the development of tourism activities in Nova Iguaçu, an intervention project for the station is proposed. This project aims to promote tourism integrated with methods of heritage education and the promotion of the cultural heritage existing in the city. To achieve this goal, this work involved a detailed analysis of the cultural heritage of Nova Iguaçu and the tourist potential of the Vila de Cava region. Onsite visits were made to the railway station and its surroundings. Additionally, theories and principles of Cultural Heritage were discussed, which are essential for understanding the material and immaterial values of the building and its surroundings. This will allow for the proposal of a new use compatible with these values and contribute to the intervention guidelines for the restoration project.
